Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, has commended President Bola Tinubu’s decision to halt the implementation of an electricity tariff hike. Speaking with journalists in Osogbo, Oyintiloye lauded the president’s action as reflective of his sensitivity to the difficulties faced by the Nigerian populace.
This decision came after Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, announced on November 8 that President Tinubu had recently intervened to stop the tariff increase and instead insisted on nationwide power consumption subsidies.
Oyintiloye, who was part of the defunct APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), remarked that removing the electricity subsidy while Nigerians are still grappling with the impact of fuel subsidy removal would have been counterproductive. He emphasized that the president’s decision demonstrates his awareness of and responsiveness to the sentiments and needs of Nigerians.
Referring to a report by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Oyintiloye highlighted that the federal government’s subsidy in the power sector escalated to N135.2 billion in the second quarter of 2023, a substantial increase from the N36 billion paid in the first quarter. This increase, he noted, is evidence of the government’s continued support in subsidizing electricity for the masses.
Oyintiloye also praised President Tinubu for his role in facilitating free and fair elections in Kogi, Imo, and Bayelsa states. He interpreted the peaceful conduct and outcomes of these elections as indicative of the president’s integrity and commitment to democratic principles.
In his address, Oyintiloye congratulated Governors Hope Uzodimma of Imo, Douye Diri of Bayelsa, and the newly elected Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi. He viewed their elections as a testament to the Nigerian people’s faith in the impartiality of the APC-led government.
Oyintiloye, a former legislator, called on Nigerians to rally behind the government’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” expressing optimism that Nigeria will soon surmount its current challenges under the present administration. His remarks underscore a belief in the administration’s capacity to navigate the country through its economic and social difficulties.
